2023-01-30 Lympo Athletes

It’s our pleasure to introduce a legendary basketball player we are proud to call Lympo Athlete — Goran Dragic.

This experienced basketball master, nicknamed “The Dragon”, has played in numerous NBA top teams, including Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and Phoenix Suns.

And, he has won the FIBA European Championship where he was named the MVP. The Slovenian basketball star will have his legacy honored by a collection of Lympo sports collectible digital cards.

Gorans’ Basketball Career

Although initially, Dragic strived to become a professional soccer player, an injury forced him to switch to basketball. His talents turned out to be versatile because, at the age of 17, Goran was already playing pro. He played one season for KD Ilirija in the minor Slovenian League before joining KD Slovan, a top-level Slovenian Basketball League club.

After two years with Slovan, Dragic was invited to play for the Spanish ACB League club Saski Baskonia, and later — for the Spanish club Murcia. In 2007, Goran Dragic returned to Slovenia, where he played for the Union Olimpija — the top basketball club in Slovenia, which formerly competed in the EuroLeague.

With Goran in their roster, the club won the Slovenian League championship that season.

In 2008, Goran entered the NBA draft and was eventually signed by the Phoenix Suns. With the Suns, Dragic scored 32 points — his then-career-high. After a few years with the team, Dragic joined the Houston Rockets for a year. In the 2011/12 season finale, Goran recorded his first-ever triple-double with 11 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds.

After a year of playing for the Rockets, Goran became a free agent. Later, he returned to the Phoenix Suns for a 4-year contract.

While playing with the Suns, Dragic recorded a new career-high 40 points in a win against the New Orleans Pelicans and won the 2014 NBA Most Improved Player Award. His achievements with the Phoenix Suns didn’t go unnoticed and he was named to the 2014 All-NBA Third Team.

In 2015, Goran joined the Miami Heat. During the 6 years he spent with the team, Dragic hit a career-high seven 3-pointers, scored a season-high of 29 points, and led the team to 11 victories in a row.

Due to his achievements during the season, Goran was invited to play in the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. In 2018, he became the first Slovenian player to reach the 10,000-point mark in the NBA. In 2021, Goran Dragic left Miami Heat and joined the Toronto Raptors.

However, in November, Dragic announced he was stepping away for personal reasons.

Apart from his remarkable career in the NBA, Dragic played for the Slovenian National Team. With the Slovenian Junior National Team, he won the 2004 FIBA Europe U-20 Championship. Later, as a member of the Slovenian National team, he helped lead Slovenia to a 5th-place finish in 2013, and the first-ever Slovenian FIBA European championship win in 2017. His performance at the 2017 championship earned Goran a Slovenian Sportsman of the year award.

Goran Dragic has left a mark in Slovenian basketball history. And for that, we would like to celebrate him by launching his own set of custom Lympo NFTs.
