Professional Career
Derrick Williams' professional career began at the University of Arizona, where he played for two seasons. He quickly made a name for himself as a dominant force on the court, averaging 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game during his sophomore year.
His impressive performances earned him the Pac-10 Player of the Year award and a spot on the First Team All-Pac-10. Which made him the first Arizona Wildcat to be selected for the spot. He also was claimed to be one of the top picks for the upcoming NBA draft.
After declaring for the NBA draft in 2011, Williams was selected second overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He made his NBA debut the same year and quickly established himself as a valuable player for the team.
During his first season, Williams earned a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and an endorsement deal with Under Armour. In 2012, Williams participated in the Rising Stars Challenge, as well as the NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest.
After a successful two NBA seasons, Derrick Williams was traded to the Sacramento Kings, where he played for another two seasons. In the Kings' 2014–15 season finale, Williams scored a season-high 22 points in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Before switching to the Chinese Basketball Association in 2017, Williams has played for several other NBA teams, including the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team with which he won the NBA championship.
In 2018, Derrick Williams signed a contract with Bayern Munich of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and the EuroLeague for the season. That season, he helped the team win the BBL finals.
Williams has proven to be a dominant force in European basketball - he played for the Turkish club Fenerbahçe, Valencia Basket in the Spanish League, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and currently - Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague.
